The Top 5 Collegiate Softball Teams

By Christy Flom on May 4, 2015

Division I softball is well underway and the conferences are more competitive than ever this year.

I know many schools are finishing up their semesters these past few weeks. While finals are a top priority for students, taking an hour or so break to catch part of a softball game is a great way to relax before a big test.

And, with such competitive teams making up the top rankings, all games this season are sure to be tough. There are hundreds of Division I teams around the nation, all playing for a chance to compete in the Women’s College World Series.

This year, the World Series will be held May 28 through June 3 at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

As teams prepare for this throughout their seasons, the top ranked teams are always in the spotlight. This season there is a wide mix of teams across the country that compile the list of the best of the best.

Taking a look at the top five collegiate softball teams, these prestigious teams have worked hard to earn their high rankings and intend to stay at the top.

5) University of Michigan

Coming in at number five is the University of Michigan. Consistently known for their great program, Michigan has continued their strong season with a record so far of 45-6-0. This ranking is the NCAA Women’s Softball RPI ranking.

In the USA and Coaches rankings, Michigan comes in as the third ranking team.

This highlights the strong competitiveness of the division this year, with many teams swaying between different top rankings.

4) Oregon

The number four-ranked team according to this list is Oregon. Switching between the number two and three spots in differing rankings is quite an accomplishment for the Ducks.

With an overall record of 41-5-0 these rankings may soon change as more games are added to the records of each team. As for now, Oregon is securely in the top five.

3) Auburn

Just ahead of Oregon is Auburn. Auburn is the only team in the top five of the RPI rankings that is not a top 5 ranked team in other lists. Oklahoma, Alabama and UCLA all seem to be edging Auburn out of their extremely high ranking.

Only time will tell how true the actual rankings of these teams are as tournament time edges closer. Hopefully Auburn and their 44-8-0 record can hold on with Michigan and Oregon to their spots.

2) LSU

And, above Auburn is LSU. As the number two team in the nation right now, LSU has a lot to prove. Other rankings have listed LSU as the number five team in the nation. Again, this is just another sign of how anything can happen this season.

LSU has had a slight decline in other rankings but it only takes a couple more wins to keep them steady in the top five.

1) Florida

One team that has been unanimously listed as leading all of the rankings is Florida. While this team is not undefeated, their mere four losses speak for themselves. In a conference that has roughly five of the top 10 teams competing against one another, Florida has had a great season so far leading the Southeastern conference.

The Gators still have a lot to prove, as being number one makes you an easy target for other teams. However, I think Florida has the skill and coaches to be the outright champ this year, but as I’ve said probably 10 times in this article already, only time will tell.

As for fans whose team sadly did not the make cut right now, don’t give up hope. Rankings are not set in stone and there is plenty of time left in the season. Most of the rankings are separated by one or two games, and these lists can change in a heartbeat. It only takes getting on a good streak of momentum or a sad case of bad luck to change things up in sports.

I know many softball junkies already have their one special team that they always root for, but for any wavering, bandwagon, finals-procrastinating students, I have but one last piece of advice:
