7 Ways To Think About Your Summer Job

By Jessi Stickel on April 28, 2016

We all know that college students want to savor every one of their summers left because soon we will have careers and we can kiss summer break goodbye.

However, let’s be realistic: many students need to work over the summer in order to earn some extra spending money or to pay off their rent or student loans. College students that do have summer jobs basically get tortured watching their friends have all the fun while they are inside all day, which can be extremely discouraging.

To keep all the students that have jobs this summer motivated, here’s what to think when you are in doubt.

1. Think: Dollar Signs

When you see that your friends went to a water park while you were stuck working, just think about all the money you are saving and making! Having a job, you will be less tempted to spend money, unlike some of your ‘free for the summer’ friends. You will also be saving up a lot of money by having a summer job. This means you will have extra spending money for at least a few months after summer ends. Or you could be working to pay off your student loans, making post-graduation less stressful.

2. Think: Experience

Once you graduate college, you will be searching for a job, which requires some type of experience. By having a summer job this summer, it may give you the upper-hand against other candidates up for the same job. Or, when you do get hired, you may be able to impress your boss(es) by having this previous knowledge.

3. Think: Resume Builder

Even if your summer job is not very useful to the particular field you want to go into, any type of jobs are always great resume builders. When you go to an interview and have lists of jobs where you’ve worked, it shows the potential employer that you are hardworking, dedicated and up for almost anything.

4. Think: No Social Media

If you are really having a difficult time dealing with seeing all of your friends’ fun summer posts, try giving up social media for the summer. (This one your parents will love!) By not going on sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat you probably won’t feel as bad for missing out on fun summer activities.

5. Think: Meeting New People

With a new summer job, you will have the opportunity to meet a whole new crowd of people. In college you meet a bunch of people, but it’s never a bad thing to know too many people. You can make lifelong friendships or even end up working with them after you graduate. You may even use these people as connections to get a job after graduation or maybe next summer.

6. Think: Preparation

Everyone knows that summer breaks aren’t going to last very much longer once you are in college, so why not give them up now, right? At least working during the summer now will prepare you for your long future of no summer breaks.

7. Think: the Weekend

Don’t think of a summer job as a death sentence because it’s totally not. Most jobs will either give you the weekend off or a couple days a week, so just make sure you live it up then! If you have weekends off, fill it with time at the pool and hanging with your friends. If you have a couple weekdays off, take advantage of the less-crowded beaches and waterparks.
