10 Fun and Affordable Things to Do This Summer

By Paige Captain on July 20, 2017

This week I really put a lot of thought into the topic of my article. I wanted it to be something that was truly beneficial to my fellow peers, while at the same time, keeping it fun. I started thinking about my own life and what puts me at a disadvantage as a college student.

It’s no secret that college students aren’t the most financially stable people in the world. With that being said, I decided to try to think of some ways that college students can still have fun but on a budget. I texted my friends and asked my Twitter followers to tell me what they do for fun that’s also affordable. These are the results.

1. A potluck with friends

This may seem not so relevant to us millennials, but I really think it’s something our generation should do more often. If everyone brings their own dish, everyone only has to cover the cost of what they bring and of course, there will be plenty of food! It’s a win-win.

2. A day trip with friends

I know at first this may seem expensive because of the cost of gas, but the more friends you bring, the less money it costs because each person chips in for gas. Plus, it’s super fun and is a nice change of scenery from your day to day life in your hometown.

3. A movie night at home

No Netflix required for this one! There are so many ways in this current age to rent movies and they are often under $5!

4. The beach (if you live close enough)

As someone who has grown up by the beach, I have always taken it for granted. Something I often forget about the beach is that you can literally go for free. Normally, what costs the most about going to the beach is paying for parking, but if you’re really trying to save on cash, parking further and walking is totally worth it.

5. Hiking

A lot of hiking trails are either cheap or free; what costs the most is the gas depending on how far away you want to go.

6. Going to a coffee shop

You could spend an entire day working on summer school homework at a coffee shop and only spend $5 on a cup of coffee (especially if you think ahead and pack your own lunch or eat before you go).

7. Anywhere with birthday deals

My boyfriend and I had wanted to go to Catalina Island for the day for quite some time, but tickets for a round trip are about $60 a person so we considered not going for awhile. That was until we found out that on your birthday, not only are tickets buy one get one free, but there are so many other discounts on the island as well.

We ended up going for his birthday in June and I’m so glad we did. I’m not kidding when I say that everything we spent money on was buy one get one free.

8. Organize/clean your room

I myself will admit that this is probably the least interesting thing on the list, but it can be fun and it certainly is free! I am home for the summer so I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in my room. During the school year, I only use my room for the occasional weekend visit and therefore don’t put any effort into keeping it clean or cute. Now that I’m home, that’s definitely changed.

9. Sleep!

When I asked my Twitter followers and friends what they do for cheap fun so many of them said sleep that I just had to include it in this list. Even though summertime doesn’t necessarily mean no school work for everyone, it does normally at least mean less, and I think that’s something us college students should take advantage of!

The school year is so busy and we always wish we could be sleeping more, so why not enjoy it during the summer? Plus, it’s free!

10. Find deals in your hometown

As I mentioned earlier, I posted on my Twitter asking my college friends what they do for fun that’s cheap. One of my friends, Angela, who just completed her first year at a community college nearby, replied by telling me about this movie theater in Huntington Beach called Beachfront Cinema.

Once a month, this on-the-sand theater has a movie showing with free admission for college students. Even though I’m sure that not everyone reading this lives in or around Huntington Beach, there truly are so many places that have deals specifically for college students. While this might not always mean free things, it does often mean at least a decent discount.
