Bernie goes to Puerto Rico
Senator and former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders announced yesterday that he will opt out of speaking at the Women’s Conference in Detroit next week in order to help victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. CNN reports that millions on the island are still without power and access to running water. Sanders will be meeting with San Juan Mayor, Carmin Yulin Cruz and discuss hurricane relief efforts, according to MLive.
The Women’s Convention faced backlash for having the politician speak.
“It is unfortunate that Senator Sanders will no longer be able to join us at the Women’s Convention next week,” the organizers said in an emailed statement to CNN. “But the humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico – which is being exacerbated by the inaction of our federal government – is a critical matter. We understand his leadership is needed in Puerto Rico and, as always, we deeply appreciate his commitment to communities in need. We look forward to continuing to work with him on issues that impact women and all Americans.”

Senate passes budget bill that could lead to major tax cuts
The Senate voted Thursday to pass a budget resolution that could eventually make it easier for Republicans to pass major tax cuts.
CNN reports, “The 51 to 49 vote was split mostly on party lines. Only GOP Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky voted no.”
To help speed tax reform, Republican leaders in the House and Senate worked with the White House to craft an amendment that would allow the House to pass the Senate version of the bill and only need 51 votes, not the usual 60, to get through.

A scholarship in partying?
Well, no not exactly. We’ll let Elise Nelson from Albright College explain what we mean:
“Scholarships: the saving grace for many college careers. Without scholarships and financial aid, hundreds of students wouldn’t be able to attend college at all. The hunt for this extra chunk of money is a necessity, but honestly, it’s not the most exciting task in the world. Why not make a party out of your scholarship search?”
