ATLANTA AIRPORT OUTAGE STRANDS THOUSANDS

Thousands of passengers were stranded in dark terminals and on the tarmac during a major power outage at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport yesterday.

“The outage, which affected all airport operations, started with a fire in a Georgia Power underground electrical facility,” Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed told CNN. The electrical fire’s intensity damaged two substations serving the airport, including the airport’s ‘redundant system’ that should have provided backup power, Reed said.

Power was restored early this morning, but the disruption led to thousands of flight delays and hundreds of cancellations and complicates the already busy Christmas holiday travel week.

C.L. Max Nikias, the head of the University of Southern California, is the highest-paid college president in the state and one of the top earners in the country, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

Nikias made nearly $3.2 million in 2015, according to a recent Chronicle of Higher Education analysis of executive pay.

The Sentinel offered this comparative insight: “The president of Santa Clara University, Jesuit Father Michael Engh, and James Donahue, head of Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, each earn the same amount: $0.”
